Stop mixing your own tracks and start sounding pro

Too many metalcore and deathcore bands crush live, but don’t stream hard hitting records

Full Stack Production

I take the tracks from your raw demos and remotely work with you to craft complete songs with tearing, metal masters

Mixing

I take tightly recorded tracks and mix them with the goal of punchy drums and wall of sound bass and guitars using my amps or your desired tones.

How it works

STEP ONE

Song Audit

I listen through your demo and discuss the big picture of your song with you to make sure we're conveying the right energy.

STEP TWO

Pre Pro

I will send song structure suggestions if we feel there’s room for improvement in the song itself

STEP THREE

Tracking, mixing, mastering

Once prepro is set I will retrack guitars, bass, and leads where necessary.  I add production elements and mix a rough pass for your feedback.  Lastly I’ll take the mix through the final polish and send you a master.

Metal is meant to sound in your face and piss you off

Metal is meant to sound in your face and piss you off

My name is Kenny Gilpin and I’ve been producing metalcore and deathcore for over 5 years now.

Bands like Linkin Park and Korn got me hooked on the energy in metal and I kept chasing that sound until I made my way into deathcore.  That is where I wanted to know how the hell these bands get such extreme sounds...

That inspired me to struggle through years of bad recordings and mixes until I finally started learning a process for creating pro sounding music. It started making some issues very apparent.

Here’s the issue I’m seeing:

Here’s the issue I’m seeing:

Metalcore and Deathcore bands playing tons of shows

Posting a lot on social media

Recording and mixing DIY

Getting mixes that just sound fake or loosely recorded and it sounds local

The music is the most important aspect of a band and the songs end up getting microwaved into a release.  There's a realness that is desperately lacking in metal right now because people are covering up weak band elements with production. There's also the polar ends of either having heaps of low end with no definition or it's all kick and guitars with no low end glue that makes metal so fun to listen to.

If you really want your music to be as crushing as bands like Thy Art is Murder, Polaris, Alpha Wolf, or Fit for an Autopsy you need to do it the way they do.

Working with a producer who specializes in deathcore and metalcore.

I live and breathe this music and focus my productions around dense guitars, drums that attack, and bright, aggressive vocals.  I use real amps and pedals that I think are massively overlooked in the world of amp sims and convenience.

There should be no shortcuts taken in your music and I will help you get the most out of your demos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: What's the timeline for this?

It depends how much song structure we want to adjust.  I will do a lot of back and forth with you so this is a collaborative experience.  You will not be in the dark!  This is your vision and my job is to bring that to life, not see it through my own lens.  Unless of course that’s what you’d prefer!

Question 2: Can't you just edit our guitar tracks instead of retracking?

The wide “wall of sound” guitars come from having a single person track L/R guitars tightly.  Overediting can remove the unique natural rhythm that comes from a tight performance.  Getting the tracking done right to begin with produces the best results and removes the guess work from editing pick attack.  That’s why I offer tracking services.  I have recorded myself almost daily for 5 years and have this down to a science.

Question 3: How does your pricing work?

I charge on a per song basis and then depending on the level of production you want to do: either full stack or mixing only.

Question 4: What is "full stack production"?

This is the A to Z process of writing, recording, mixing, and mastering a song.  It is the best way to get the best results in your music without going back and forth on tracking revisions, restringing guitars, or endless mixing rabbit holes.  It allows the producer to make the right choices for your vision from the very beginning where the critical song structure and tone decisions are made.

Question 5: Can you take a project file?

I can accept a Cubase or Logic file, but the best method is to export all of your audio tracks to wave files and provide any midi tracks in a file labeled with the sample rate and tempo.  I also require raw guitar and bass DIs although if you would like to include your amp sounds I can use these as a reference.

Question 6: Can we send live drum tracking?

I can listen to the tracks to determine if the bleed is ok.  Live drums are tricky because they are expensive to record well.  You need a really large good sounding room or a heavily treated dead room.  Then the playing needs to be very rehearsed or the editing will need to be intense and at that point you might as well program midi.  Modern drums require sampling to get the impact that’s expected today so at a certain point the live drums get replaced.

I have used recorded drums to actually map out the midi for bands and in this case the quality of the recording isn’t as dire.
